Most people are more familiar with the top load washer. I am more partial to the Whirlpool top load model known as the "direct drive top load". While every model has its weak points, I prefer the top load model as long as it is the direct drive. How do you know which one this is?
Well, lets start by listing the different models....
Top Load #1- actuates cycle through the timer knob (push-pull).
Top Load #2- Is controlled by a curcuit board. Has start, pause, and cancel buttons. May have a digital display(HE).
Front Load- Front loading model, capable of higher speed spins. Digitally controlled (HE).
While the newer front and top load models may be more efficient, they have their own problems as well. People don't know how to maximize the unit for longer life. There are issues like:
Some people might think that the newer front and top loads will be better with the same "low maintenance" of the older push/pull timer knob models. With the proper information any one of these machines are a good choice, except the #2 Top Loader. I do not recommend this machine from any manufacture/ brand. There are too many issues with these and their are constantly changing the design. Which means unproven preformance. IF you buy something that hasn't been on the market for atleast 3 years, you are part of the R&D department and you will pay the price for it.
SO, my ratings on washer designs are:
9. TOP LOAD- ELECTRONIC CONTROL
This is just my (Tim Martin) opinion, but it is an opinion that is 10+ years in the making, from working on these units......
